Development in Academic Performance: Text

Background:

Children and adolescents are recommended to participate in at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity. It is largely a schools' responsibility to ensure children are meeting these activity recommendations. Additionally, physical activity in children has been shown to be positively associated with scores on both Math and ELA (Wright et. al, 2016, p.7).

The Association

In "The Association Between School-Based Physical Activity, Including Physical Education, and Academic Performance" (CDC), eight separate elementary school recess studies were mentioned. Reported from various articles, six out of eight of these studies examined the impact recess had on academic performance. All eight studies reported at least one positive association among recess and "indicators of cognitive skills, attitudes, and academic behavior; none of the investigations found negative associations.
